BlogSeasonal Damp Prevention: Preparing Your Home for Winter
--------------------------------------------------------

 31 March 2026

Winter is when most damp problems in London homes either start or get noticeably worse. The combination of heavy rainfall, cold external walls, increased condensation from indoor heating, and reduced ventilation creates ideal conditions for moisture to build up inside your property.

The good news is that many winter damp issues are preventable. By taking a few practical steps in autumn, you can significantly reduce the risk of water damage, mould growth, and costly repair bills. Here is what to focus on.

Why Winter Makes Damp Worse
---------------------------

Understanding why damp peaks in winter helps you target your prevention efforts effectively.

**More rain, more ground saturation.** London receives the bulk of its annual rainfall between October and March. Prolonged wet weather saturates the ground around your property, raising the water table and increasing hydrostatic pressure against below-ground walls. This is the primary driver of [rising damp](/guides/signs-of-rising-damp) and basement water ingress during winter months.

**Cold walls create condensation.** When warm indoor air meets a cold external wall, the moisture in the air condenses on the surface. This is the most common cause of damp in bedrooms, bathrooms, and north-facing rooms during winter. The condensation often appears as water droplets on windows, damp patches on walls, or black mould in corners and behind furniture.

**Reduced ventilation traps moisture.** In summer, windows are open and air circulates freely. In winter, homes are sealed up to conserve heat, and the moisture generated by cooking, showering, drying clothes, and simply breathing has nowhere to go. A family of four produces roughly 10 to 15 litres of moisture per day through normal activities — all of which needs to be ventilated out.

Outdoor Preparation: Your First Line of Defence
-----------------------------------------------

The exterior of your home is where water ingress begins. Addressing these areas before the first heavy rains of autumn is the most effective form of prevention.

### Clear and Repair Gutters and Downpipes

Blocked gutters are one of the most common causes of [penetrating damp](/guides/what-causes-penetrating-damp) in London homes. When gutters overflow, water runs down the face of the wall instead of being carried away. Over weeks and months, this saturates the brickwork and eventually appears as damp patches on internal walls.

Check all gutters and downpipes for leaves, moss, and debris. Look for sagging sections, loose brackets, and cracked joints. Pay particular attention to where downpipes connect to underground drains — blockages here cause water to pool at the base of walls.

### Inspect External Walls and Pointing

Damaged or eroded mortar joints allow rainwater to penetrate directly into the brickwork. Walk around your property and look for crumbling mortar, cracks in render, or gaps around window and door frames. Repointing affected areas before winter seals these entry points and is far cheaper than treating the damp that results from ignoring them.

### Check Ground Levels and Drainage

If soil, paving, or decking has built up against your external walls above the level of your damp proof course (DPC), rainwater can bypass the DPC entirely and cause rising damp. The DPC is typically a thin horizontal line visible in the mortar — ground level should sit at least 150mm below it.

Also check that paths and patios slope away from the building, not towards it. Water pooling against the base of walls is a direct route to below-ground moisture problems. For more on how damp proof courses work, see our [DPC guide](/guides/damp-proof-course).

Indoor Preparation: Managing Moisture at the Source
---------------------------------------------------

Even with a watertight exterior, indoor moisture can cause significant damp problems if not managed properly over winter.

### Maintain Consistent Heating

It is tempting to only heat rooms when you are using them, but intermittent heating causes walls to cool down between heating cycles. Cold walls are condensation magnets. A lower, more consistent temperature throughout the day is better for damp prevention than short bursts of high heat.

This does not mean heating empty rooms to 21 degrees. Even maintaining 14 to 16 degrees in unused rooms prevents the walls from reaching the dew point where condensation forms.

### Ventilate Effectively

Ventilation is the single most important factor in preventing condensation damp. The goal is to replace moist indoor air with drier outdoor air without losing too much heat.

- **Use extractor fans** in kitchens and bathrooms every time you cook or shower, and leave them running for 15 to 20 minutes after you finish
- **Open trickle vents** on double-glazed windows — they exist specifically for background ventilation and should never be permanently closed in winter
- **Avoid drying clothes on radiators** inside the home. Each load of wet laundry releases roughly 2 litres of water into the air. Use a vented tumble dryer or dry clothes outdoors when weather permits
- **Open windows briefly** each morning for 10 to 15 minutes to flush out overnight moisture build-up, especially in bedrooms

### Move Furniture Away from External Walls

Wardrobes, sofas, and beds pushed tight against external walls trap air and prevent it from circulating. The wall surface behind the furniture stays cold and damp while the rest of the room dries out. This is where black mould colonies commonly develop unseen.

Leave a gap of at least 50mm between furniture and external walls, particularly on north-facing sides of the property.

Early Warning Signs to Watch For
--------------------------------

Even with good preparation, problems can develop. Catching them early makes the difference between a simple fix and a major remediation project.

- **Condensation on windows every morning** — some is normal, but persistent heavy condensation indicates inadequate ventilation
- **Musty smells** in rooms that were fine during summer — this suggests hidden moisture accumulation
- **New damp patches appearing on internal walls**, especially after heavy rain — likely penetrating damp from an exterior defect
- **Mould growth in corners, around windows, or behind furniture** — a ventilation and/or insulation problem
- **Peeling wallpaper or blistering paint** on external walls — moisture is migrating through the masonry

If you are unsure whether what you are seeing is condensation, rising damp, or penetrating damp, our [damp diagnosis guide](/guides/rising-damp-penetrating-damp-or-condensation) walks you through how to tell the difference.

When to Call a Professional
---------------------------

Seasonal preparation handles the preventable causes of damp, but some problems require professional assessment and treatment. You should arrange a survey if:

- Damp patches persist regardless of weather or ventilation improvements
- You notice damp in a basement or cellar — this is almost always a structural waterproofing issue, not condensation. See our [cellar waterproofing guide](/guides/cellar-waterproofing) or [basement waterproofing service](/services/basement-waterproofing)
- Mould keeps returning in the same spot after cleaning
- You can see or feel that internal plaster is blown (hollow-sounding when tapped) — this may require [remedial plastering](/services/plastering) after the damp source is resolved
- The property has no visible damp proof course, or you suspect the existing one has failed

A professional damp survey identifies the root cause and recommends the right treatment — rather than a generic fix that may not address your specific problem. [Get in touch](/contact-us) to arrange a survey before winter sets in.

Seasonal Damp Prevention Checklist
----------------------------------

Use this as a quick reference each autumn:

1. Clear gutters, downpipes, and drains of debris
2. Repair cracked pointing, render, and window seals
3. Confirm ground levels sit below the damp proof course
4. Check paths and patios slope away from walls
5. Service extractor fans in kitchens and bathrooms
6. Open trickle vents on all double-glazed windows
7. Move furniture away from external walls (50mm minimum gap)
8. Set heating to a low, consistent temperature rather than intermittent blasts
9. Avoid drying clothes indoors on radiators
10. Inspect the property monthly for new damp patches, mould, or condensation

Taking these steps each year costs very little but can prevent damp problems that are expensive and disruptive to fix. For properties that already have an existing damp issue, prevention alone will not be enough — but it will stop the problem from getting worse while you arrange [professional treatment](/services/rising-and-penetrating-damp).
